aao, count it.
i indulged a bit after a recent influx in cash came in (read: payday) and bought an acer aspire one (this model). everything is in japanese though which is making things annoyingly difficult. at the moment, i am preparing to install windows 7 beta and start off way fresh. at a later point i will probably install ubuntu over the system.
so far, i enjoy this little netbook. it is exactly what i need considering my current circumstances. i simply don’t have enough time to do things that a more highly-powered device would be capable of. the only time i use my current laptop is to chat, check emails, and do some daily reading – all the things that netbooks are designed to do quite well.
in order to get things grooving, i am following the steps on this page, it’s pretty straightforward so far. and here’s a nice review of what i can expect should things go well.
updates in a few hours.
update 1 (mar 30 @ 5:11am): no luck. 8gb usb sticks don’t play nicely when trying to convert to fat16 – learn something new everyday. programs that would have been helpful don’t install or work well with japanese win xp. finally thought of a possible workaround – partition the drive, then convert the first partition to fat16, then try again.
update 2 (9:55am): it’s been about a full 12 hours since i first attempted this mess. good thing i can say this mess is a success. although the usb boot wasn’t working, i just installed from withing windows xp itself. sometime during the process i took a nap here and there. i found a bunch of drivers for my system just in case i needed them but it seems like everything is working fine so far. all the programs i normally use are working and the system itself is pretty smooth.
i am le tired…
